Jess Herdman is an editor, indexer, and book designer, and a cultural historian. Their research explores music, gender, poverty, religion, violence, and colonialism. They hold a PhD in musicology from UC Berkeley, where they completed a dissertation that explored how music was used to foment violence and mark out difference during the Wars of Religion in Lyon. Their subsequent work in two postdoctoral fellowships moved into the space of French–Wendat encounter through projects focused on the traces of a matriarchal Wendat musical politics of diplomacy and survivance in a 17th century manuscript of Catholic devotional songs.
