This course examines the Era of the American Revolution from the end of the Seven Years’ War until the ratification of the US constitution and Bill of Rights in 1791. The main focus of the course is on how and why thirteen colonies in North America successfully seceded from the British Empire. Attention is also paid to the experiences of Indigenous peoples, slaves, Loyalists, and ordinary American settlers. Finally, the course briefly compares the American Revolution with other Atlantic revolutions such as those in France, Saint-Domingue (renamed Haiti), and the Spanish American colonies.
