Internship Spotlight: Janice Chan

Janice Chan completed her 4-week internship with MacDon earlier this Fall, before officially graduating with Human Resource Management Diploma last week.

Under the supervision of the HR team at MacDon, Janice was able to gain real work experience before heading into the job market to launch her career as an HR professional in Winnipeg.

“The team members in the big HR team were all professionals who were able to provide me with valuable industry-specific insights related to various HR functions, including the current labour market, recruitment strategies, compensation and benefits, training and development, labour relations, health and safety, etc.”

“My direct supervisor, Bruno Frossard was not only a good supervisor but also an excellent mentor,” says Janice. “He always shared his knowledge and experience with me and gave me valuable feedback for improvement. I gained valuable experience and courage from this internship to move into a new life journey in a new country."

Janice says her program equipped her for the internship experience as it provided a comprehensive overview of human resource management with different HR specializations.

“The program allowed me to apply my knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom to real-life situations quickly,” she said.

“All the sharing and discussion during class with the instructors and classmates enriched my background knowledge and boosted my critical thinking. So, whatever I saw or experienced at work, I could always associate the principles and learning from the classroom, and it could lead me to ask useful questions for deep diving into a specific topic.”

Janice also said the diversity in her classroom helped improve her interpersonal skills and increased her cultural competency, an essential skill for an HR professionals.
