Navigating Changes with Confidence: Why University of Winnipeg PACE is Still Your Best Option

Navigating Changes with Confidence: Why University of Winnipeg PACE is Still Your Best Option

It's natural to worry about how changes might affect your plans, however, PACE is here to reassure you that these changes are designed to protect and benefit genuine students like you.

As a prospective international student, you might be feeling anxious about the recent changes announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It's natural to worry about how these changes might affect your plans. However, we at PACE are here to reassure you that these changes are designed to protect and benefit genuine students like you. Let's break down the key takeaways and explain why PACE remains the best choice for your educational and career.

Understanding the International Student Cap

The new cap on international students is not a barrier but a protective measure. This cap is intended to curb abuse of the system and ensure that genuine students have a fair chance to study and eventually apply for permanent residency. With fewer competitors, your chances of securing permanent residency increase.

How PACE Students are Impacted

The good news is that PACE students are not negatively impacted by these changes. In fact, several aspects of the policy changes are beneficial:

  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): Previously not applicable, PACE programs are now eligible to issue PALs to students, which supports your study permit application.
  • Off-Campus Employment: Starting this September, PACE full-time students can work up to 24 hours per week, an increase from the current 20 hours. This allows you to gain valuable work experience and earn extra income.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): The eligibility and length of the PGWP remain unchanged. PACE programs continue to qualify, meaning you can work in Canada for a period equal to your program length (up to three years for programs of two years or more).

Enhanced Options for Student Direct Stream (SDS) Applicants

For those eligible for the Student Direct Stream (SDS), the changes bring even more opportunities:

  • More Recognized English Tests: Previously limited to IELTS-Academic, SDS now recognizes multiple English tests including IELTS-General, TOEFL-iBT, CELPIP, PTE, and CAEL. This flexibility allows you to choose the test that best suits your strengths.
  • Increased Off-Campus Work Hours: With fewer requirements and the ability to work more hours off-campus, you can better support yourself financially while studying.

Welcoming Your Family

Canada’s policies continue to support international students bringing their families:

  • Spouses: They can apply for the Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) once you start post-graduation employment or join you as visitors initially.
  • Children: Children under 22 can come with you on a study permit, while adult children can apply for an Open Work Permit when you begin post-graduation employment.

Economic Advantage of Choosing PACE

When comparing the costs of a PACE program versus a master’s degree, PACE offers significant economic benefits. A one-year PACE program not only saves you money but also positions you quickly for the job market. PACE alumni, on average, earn $68,000 annually, which is a testament to the program’s value.

Moreover, if you have a spouse, their income from a SOWP (after you graduate) can further enhance your financial stability, making PACE a smart and cost-effective choice.

Conclusion

Despite the changes, PACE remains committed to providing top-quality education and support to international students. Our programs are designed to help you succeed, and the recent policy changes by IRCC offer even more flexibility and opportunities. Embrace this journey with confidence, knowing that PACE is your partner in achieving your academic and career goals in Canada. We look forward to welcoming you and helping you thrive.
