There is no doubt that in today’s competitive business environment, strong writing skills are essential to an individual’s career success. Ultimately, the ability to communicate clearly and concisely reflects well - not only on the writer - but on the organization they represent. This experiential course is designed to build and enhance your ability to write effectively and proficiently. By learning and working with techniques that lead to powerful writing, you will be well positioned to contribute to the success of your organization and your career.

This course combines interactive, hands-on classroom sessions with online content. You will learn key strategies for writing effective business correspondence and for recognizing the most appropriate delivery channel, whether it be email, internal memo, letter or report. Emphasis will be placed on plain language, powerful sentence and paragraph structure and the correct use of grammar and important writing mechanics. All of these concepts will be applied to writing effective business documents with an emphasis on the most current business style.

Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Use the three phases of The Writing Process (planning, writing and revising) when developing written documents;
  • Identify and address the needs of specific audiences;
  • Write clear and concise messages using plain language, correct grammar and punctuation;
  • Format documents to enhance readability and present a professional message;
  • Recognize how business communication in North America compares and contrasts with business communication in other parts of the world.
