Who drank too much?
Who had the nastiest temper? Who was faithful? Who was not?
Who had problems with the truth? Did they all?
Modern technology has rendered kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers—even popes and patriarchs—into mortal men and women with visible virtues and vices that would have been largely hidden to the public in the past. Most of the forty-four American presidents have, by definition, been extraordinary men, but they share a humanity with the rest of us that power and history both magnifies and obscures. We shall examine this shared humanity through lectures on presidential appetites, temperament, health, foibles, and family relationships.
