This course will include showings, analysis and discussion of six films set in Britain around World War Two. While many wartime movies focus on battle scenes and soldiers, these films explore the civilian experience and especially the home-front lives of women. They range in approach from peppy, morale-boosting propaganda to darker expressions of fear and loss to spirited comedy. We will look at Mrs. Miniver, 1942; Went the Day Well?, 1942; The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, 1943; Millions Like Us, 1943; Brief Encounter, 1945; and Whisky Galore!, 1949.
