The General Strike is an event that most Winnipeggers are aware of. Often, though, what the strike means to people is one or two iconic events, like Bloody Saturday, but the details of the events that led up to the strike, the actual causes, the difficult situation facing many Winnipeg working families, and the ways in which the various groups involved participated are not so familiar. We will be looking at these and other topics in some detail. The trials of the so called strike leaders in late 1919 and 1920 are of great interest. From the transcripts of the trials we learn a great deal about the strike leaders and the lawyers who prosecuted or defended them. This story will form an important part of the course. The final session will be devoted to the historiography of the strike over the last 100 years and the ways in which it has been remembered and portrayed over time.
