In 2017, one in five (22%) of the Canadian population aged 15 years and over – or about 6.2 million individuals – had one or more disabilities. Here in Manitoba, the disability community is made up of one in four Manitobans. In response to the growing need for more accessible goods, services and environments, The Manitoba Government passed the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA)in 2013, spelling out employers’ obligations to create more accessible and inclusive workplaces.

Accessibility and workplace accommodation has been brought to light even more so during the global pandemic including demands for increased mental health support in the workplace with nearly 500,000 Canadians missing work each week due to mental health issues. This 2-day Seminar explores the roll of HR in creating supportive, accessible and inclusive workplaces for all Manitobans.

Outcomes
  • Understand disability and aging demographics and how they relate to workplace accessibility.
  • Learn how the AMA, and its standards can guide practice and understand the legal framework that this legislation was built.
  • Understand how Canadian accessibility legislation and other provincial accessibility legislation is impacting Manitoba’s accessibility framework.
  • Learn how accessibility ties into Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the role of HR in ensuring an inclusive workplace.
  • Gain exposure to useful tools to help identify and remove accessibility barriers in the workplace.
  • Explore practical application of employment legislation such as Duty to Accommodate, the Right to Privacy, and the petametres of Reasonable Accommodation as they relate to people with disabilities.
  • Participate in Case Scenarios that help HR professionals to increase accessibility and inclusion in a variety of situations.
  • Participants will spend time learning about the CSA's Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace Standard, how it relates to mental health and the importance offering supportive experiences for all employees.
