This course will explore cultural and ethnic diversity in the classroom focusing on the sensitivity of non-verbal cues, learning styles, and negotiation of classroom culture. The question “What is the Canadian Culture?” and what make us unique as Canadians from the culture perspective will be examined. Cultural values of newcomers to Canada  will be explored and how they fit in the framework of the Canadian culture. The emphasis of the course is to increase awareness and develop respect for diversity. This course will provide students with an awareness of cultural and ethnic diversity and an understanding of cross cultural awareness and how it relates to learning.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define and use Hofstede's theory of cultural dimension and its role in explaining national cultural difference with an emphasis on students in the classroom
  • Provide examples of cultural and ethnic diversity in the classroom
  • List and define examples of how a culture impacts non-verbal cues, behaviour, learning styles, and classroom dynamic
  • Learn strategies to model respectful behaviour and acceptance of diverse cultures
