With immigration fast approaching the Canadian birth rate and borders evaporating through globalization, it is essential for business and its leaders to understand the influence of cultural orientation on the overall society and on personal and institutional values. This course will explore topics including power distance, individualism versus collectivism, risk-taking, gender roles, and short-term versus long-term orientation. This course will also examine how national culture affects communication style, business relations, and conflict situations and provide some practical tips to navigate the nuance of different cultural dynamics.

Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Increase their cultural competency through an understanding of Hofstede's theory of cultural dimension and its role in explaining national cultural difference
  • Articulate how national or regional cultural dimensions are influenced by the expected level of individualism in a given locality
  • Apply the Hofstede framework to distinguish the differences in orientation to cultural values between countries
  • Incorporate cross-cultural awareness into management, communication, and negotiation practices in the workplace
  • Explore the cross section of various cultural dimensions to better inform global business decisions and explain how cross-cultural awareness leads to long lasting multinational partnerships
