Fundraising and fund development are essential skills for public relations practitioners working in the not-for-profit sector.  This course will provide students with the theoretical, practical and ethical foundations to assist organizations in advancing their fund development strategies.  It will analyze different fundraising practices and approaches and explore how to integrate these into an existing fund development model. Topics will include organizational analysis and fundraising design, recognizing fund development opportunities, donor relations, corporate partnerships, grants, and capital campaigns. Students will learn how to plan, design and execute a fundraising initiative including the budgeting, goal setting and volunteer management components.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will:

  • Distinguish the difference between the long-term strategies of fund development and shorter-term initiatives related to fundraising
  • Apply a variety of tools and methodologies to fundraising activities, capital campaigns, grant proposals, and fund solicitation strategies;
  • Align a fund development plan to the organizational mission
  • Know how to integrate marketing, stakeholder and volunteer management, communication, events, giving activities, and capital campaigns into a fund development plan
  • Identify legal and ethical considerations including privacy and information management, social media and legal jurisdiction, and financial accountability
  • Understand the importance of cultivating and sustaining donor, volunteer, and stakeholder relationships
