The Graphic Design for Non-Designers I course provides students with a solid foundation in the basics of the Adobe Photoshop application, one of the most popular software applications for working with digital graphics. Students will discuss digital graphics, graphic design and typography in general, as well as learning to navigate the Photoshop interface, using the numerous tools, and saving files for display on the Web.

Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will:

  • Have an overview of the Tools palette
  • Create and alter type
  • Understand the basics of Typography
  • Understand the basic concepts of Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity (CARP)
  • Use color theory to choose meaningful colours for graphic designs;
  • Use the History panel
  • Customize the workspace
  • Understand image resolution and size
  • Straighten and crop an image
  • Use many different methods to create a selection
  • Adjust the position of a selection
  • Add to and subtract from a selection
  • Organize artwork on layers
  • Create, view, hide and select layers
  • Link layers
  • Use Layer Styles (effects)
  • Differentiate between bitmap and vector graphics
  • Draw straight and curved paths using the Pen tool
  • Convert a path to a selection and a selection to a path
  • Save for the web
  • Create designs based on corporate visual identity guidelines
