Organizations today require people with the knowledge, skills and abilities to manage increasingly complex operations.  This course introduces the role of operations management and explores the scope and the challenges of production and distribution. Topics include decision analysis, capacity planning, facility layout, Total Quality Management (TQM), supply chain management, materials requirements planning, enterprise resource planning, lean systems and just-in-time manufacturing.

Prerequisites

  • Business Fundamentals
  • Financial Fundamentals
Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will:

  • Explain the principles of operations management and terminology
  • Discuss the relationships between operations, productivity and competitiveness
  • Identify the difference between the operations of a manufacturing concern and a service organization
  • Explain the functions of inventory and quality management
  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept of integration in the supply chain
  • Explain the purpose of production plans, master production schedules, handling capacity constraints and maintenance order control
  • Perform the basic operations of production planning and inventory management including material and labour requirements
  • Analyse and solve a variety of hypothetical and real world OM problems; (everyday situations)
