Some young people are able to bounce back from hardship while others struggle to do so. This course examines the characteristics of resiliency and effective strategies which educational assistants may employ to support students to meet life’s challenges and to become healthy and capable in times of rapid change. The program includes lectures, TED Talks, group discussion, personal reflection and interactive class activities.

Topics Include:

  • Coping with change
  • The power of perception
  • Perceptions of personal capabilities
  • Perceptions of personal signifigance
  • Perceptions of personal power
  • Developing the intrapersonal skills of self discipline
  • Developing the interpersonal skills of effective communication
  • Developing personal and social responsibility
  • Developing decision-making skills based upon values and principles
  • Planning for the future
Objectives
  • To provide practical knowledge about helping individuals meet life’s challenges and become capable people
Outcomes

All participants will be able to:

  • Define the concept of resilience using an example
  • Personally relate stories from their own life to the concept of resilience
  • Identify key factors to the development of resilience and strategies to promote resilience in students and their personal lives
  • Develop and practice their skills as an educational assistant in fostering their students’ resilience capacity
