This course covers the HR field from a strategic perspective. It looks at HR management which includes: strategic importance, job analysis and design, planning, human rights and legal considerations, recruitment, selection, orientation and training, performance management and appraisal, compensation, employee relations and labour relations. Students will have an overview of the areas of responsibility and general principles of HR management within the Canadian environment.

Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the historical development and conceptual foundation of Human Resource Management
  • Develop the knowledge, skills and concepts needed to resolve actual human resource management problems or issues
  • Analyze and demonstrate the influence of government legislation on Human Resources
  • Examine and analyze the concepts and techniques involved in human resource requirements through planning
  • Manage the employment relationship, which is a shared responsibility between employers, management, human resources specialists, and employees
  • Investigate how HRM is responding to current business trends, opportunities, and challenges
  • Identify the human resources needs of an organization or department
  • Identify social issues relating to human resource management such as systemic discrimination and develop approaches to resolving these problems in the workplace through various methods learned in class
  • Conduct a job analysis and produce a job description from the job analysis
  • Identify and predict human resource management trends and develop proactive solutions and techniques of adaptation to changing industry demands
  • Evaluate the procedures and practices used for recruiting and selecting suitable employees
  • Discuss workplace health and safety programs and the roles of the employer and the employee in enforcing health and safety policies and procedures
  • Explain the responsibilities of management, HRM specialists, managers, and employees in managing the employment relationship in a unionized or a non-unionized environment
