With accounting job opportunities almost 2% higher than other professional fields in Canada, businesses place a high premium on the accounting professional. This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts and principles of accounting and illustrates its business application. Spanning the gamut of accounting terminology to preparing a financial statement, this course provides a solid overview of the accounting process and prepares students for continued study in the accounting stream. This course will also explore how personal integrity, ethics and objectivity shape and influence professional practice.

Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will:

  • Gain proficiency with key accounting terminologies, principles, concepts and, procedures;
  • Understand different types of business structures, the flow of financial information in an organization, and the basic design of different accounting systems;
  • Record and summarize financial transactions through journals, ledgers, trial balances and worksheets;
  • Identify and properly record adjusting and closing entries;
  • Complete accounting cycle activities;
  • Generate financial statements;
  • Complete both periodic and perpetual inventory entries;
  • Complete direct and allowance method entries for handling write-offs;
  • Design systems and controls for receivables, payables, and capital assets.
