Collaboration is essential to the new boundaryless organizational structure.  Positively channeling the various archetypal influences and integrating effective cross-functional teamwork within the organization is a key role of the manager.

In this course, students will gain an understanding of the fundamental skills necessary for leading teams and achieving results through others. This course will include topics such as performance management and corrective action, team development, cross-functional coordination, change management, diversity in the workplace, and employee engagement.  The course will also focus on soft skills development in the areas of active listening, conflict resolution, communication, coaching, and feedback.

Outcomes
  • Define what a supervisor is and identify the general functions and characteristics of a successful supervisor.
  • Discuss the supervisor’s role in the planning and productivity improvement process and why and how supervisors delegate.
  • Describe techniques for communicating effectively, identify barriers to communication, and suggest ways to avoid them.
  • Identify ways supervisors can motivate, counsel and discipline their employees.
  • Describe ways to plan the use of time and explain how supervisors can manage their stress.
  • Describe strategies for managing conflict and explain how supervisors can initiate conflict resolution, respond to a conflict, and mediate conflict resolution.
  • Discuss common roles for supervisors in the selection process and explain how job descriptions and job specifications help in selecting employees.
  • Explain the purpose of conducting performance appraisal interviews and tell how supervisors should prepare for a performance appraisal interview.
