This seminar will provide practical strategies for understanding academic writing assignments, assessing and implementing sources of information, documenting sources in appropriate formats and practising writing strategies. Students will gain an understanding of the writing process, critical thinking, assessing and using research in assignments along with proper citation and referencing.

A written component is included which provides students with a practical experience in the academic writing process.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Assess academic and non-academic sources of information
  • Properly incorporate sources of information into academic papers and assignments
  • Properly document sources in the appropriate citation and referencing style
  • Understand the writing process
  • Develop critical thinking skills relating to written assignments and the writing process
  • Develop and practice writing skills including paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting written material
