The Network Security program culminates with a competition based capstone project combining the theoretical and practical knowledge students have acquired throughout the network security program. In this course, students will research and discover areas of network security, problem-solving scenarios, which will enhance each student’s network security literacy while increasing their problem-solving abilities in a live network competition environment. Students will propose and develop an application, incorporating security tools to solve the problem.

Assignments will work in stages dealing with operating system risk mitigation strategies and network configuration. The class will conclude with a summative digital resume and a final report covering key configurations completed throughout the class, along with a solution to a network security problem.

The digital resume is aimed at representing a real-world situation where IT security professionals are responsible for incident response and reporting information to stakeholders.  The final report will include elements such as project objective, literature survey, system analysis, and solution. This course will also help students to connect with industry professionals.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop mitigation strategies for common desktop and server operating systems.
  • Apply basic operating system and network vulnerability assessment strategies.
  • Implement a small office or home office network environment.
  • Plan and execute a network penetration test.
  • Perform research work, including preparing reports.
  • Plan and develop a Network Security application utilizing suitable software.
