The lives of British royalty include many stories of sexual and/or emotional relationships which happened outside of marriage or resulted in a clandestine marriage. Such stories are not just royal gossip, as some of these relationships, such as that of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson, were of great political importance. Besides, they are stories not about royalty alone but also about the ‘significant others,’ whether we call them mistresses, lovers or favourites. Who were these women and men, what were they like, what did they bring to their royal relationships, and what were they hoping to get from them? The course will begin in the Middle Ages with Edward II and Piers Gaveston and end with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles. In between there will be stories about nearly every generation of British royalty.
