Businesses that foster a continuous learning culture and build effective organizational development systems are better positioned for superior competitive performance and to withstand technological or environmental change. HR professionals need a sound foundation of training and development and the essential skills to design systems that are effective in supporting the organizational strategy. The primary objective of training and development is to improve organizational effectiveness and create actionable and measurable change both in individual and organizational performance. The course provides an overview of the function and practice of training and development and includes a discussion of current trends and developments.

Prerequisites

  • Principles of Human Resource Management
Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will:

  • Explain the difference between training and development by aligning training needs to business objectives.
  • Describe the stages of learning, the principles of adult learning theory, conditioning theory and social cognitive theory.
  • Explain the difference between formal and informal learning by providing examples for each.
  • Participants will be able to apply the needs analysis process to a business problem, design and administer a needs analysis method and recommend solutions based on feedback from stakeholders and data collected.
  • Identify a variety of instructional methods based on individual learning styles to help facilitate a positive learning environment.
  • Write a training objective for a one-day training to the extent that the three elements (performance, condition and criterion) are included.
  • Participants will be able to design a one-day training by completing a lesson plan that includes a variety of instructional methods to assist participants in applying what they’ve learned.
  • Participants will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of a one-day training and measure the ROI based on the outcomes of the training evaluation.
  • Recommend when to incorporate synchronous and asynchronous training into a training program.
  • Describe topics covered in training programs that include human rights, employment equity, employment standards and apprenticeship training.
