Christianity emerged neither fully-formed nor in a vacuum. Rather, it was a dynamic product of the social and religious landscape of the first-century Roman Empire. Over six weeks, this course will give an overview of the way in which Christianity grew from a minor Jewish sect in the first century to the religion of the Empire by the end of the fourth. Using historical analysis of primary sources such as New Testament texts, non-canonical gospels, letters, treatises, and archaeological remains, we will attempt to reconstruct the world that helped to shape Christianity as it spread. Through lectures and group discussions, we will examine the ways that men and women thought about this new movement and observe how some of these traces can still be seen today.
