Attendance & Academic Requirements

Can I miss class occasionally?

The University expects your full attendance. This is a professional program and we expect professional conduct. Full-time programs are very intense; falling behind could compromise your success. While we understand that illness and unavoidable time conflicts happen, the University expects full attendance.

Absenteeism could jeopardize your academic success as UWPACE has attendance regulations that affect your eligibility for graded standing. Failure to meet the minimum attendance requirement may result in a failing grade and jeopardize successful program completion. Absenteeism also compromises functional group work and classroom relations.

Is there a Code of Conduct for the classroom?

Students are expected to:

  • Arrive promptly and attend class in accordance to the scheduled course hours;
  • Respect the individual right to engage in class discussion without monopolizing "air time";
  • Respect individual learning needs by avoiding activities that distract from a productive learning environment such as side conversations, eating noisy or aromatic food, and frequently coming and going from the classroom;
  • Conduct oneself professionally at all times and refrain from behaviour such as swearing, shouting, bullying, or intimidation;
  • Mute or turn off cell phones, pagers, and all other personal communication devices;
  • Refrain from inappropriate use of computers (i.e., games, emails, and website searches) during class-time;
  • Notify the instructor or the University administration of all class absences in advance, preferably by email and before 9am on the day of class whenever possible;
  • Avoid scheduling personal appointments (dental, doctor etc.) or work shifts during class hours.
What Kind of Course-Related Work Assignments Can I Expect?

The individual course instructor determines how a course is evaluated, and you may be required to participate in:

  • Quizzes
  • Tests
  • Mid-term and final examinations
  • Term papers
  • Presentations
  • Business letters
  • Journals
  • Case studies
What is the minimum passing grade?

You must achieve a minimum grade of "C" or better in all letter-graded courses and receive a "P" on all Pass/Fail courses.

What happens if I fail a course?

If you fail a course, the grade will stand on your transcript. You have the option to retake it or another authorized substitute at your own expense to meet the program requirements.

Internship

Internship is a gateway to your re-entry into the workforce and provides a tangible framework to develop hands-on work experience. Internship will help you gain confidence in skills developed through your studies and build a portfolio through real-world work assignments.

What are the internship eligibility criteria?

You are expected to commit a minimum of 140 hours of direct service to the internship site.

Internship approval is conditional to an exemplary attendance record and a minimum grade point of 3.0 (B or higher).

Is internship mandatory?

No, but it is strongly recommended. Participating in an internship can provide you with work experience, references, and contacts within your field, allowing you to enhance your resume and expand your professional network.

What qualifies as an internship site?

The UWPACE will approve an internship site based on the following criteria:

  1. The site allows you to build on the theory and practice acquired through your studies
  2. The internship site will benefit your career goals
  3. The organization assigns an experienced practitioner to supervise you
  4. The Site Supervisor is committed to mentoring, and will provide on-going feedback about your work
  5. The internship organization commits physical space and technology to support your work
  6. The University approves the proposed work assignments
How do I apply for internship?

Qualified applicants apply through the prescribed internship application process based on the internship opportunities available through the University.

When do I start my internship?

The internship placement is scheduled during the final month of the program and students work approximately seven hours per day over a 20-day period.

Can I lose an internship?

You may lose an internship due to poor job performance, lack of professionalism, or chronic absenteeism.

How is the internship evaluated?

Internships are graded pass or fail. Internship site supervisors provide a brief evaluation to the Internship Coordinator, outlining the time committed, and possibly including feedback for the student. Once the evaluation is returned, the Pass/Fail will be recorded on the student’s transcript.

Internship site supervisors often provide direct feedback to the intern towards the end of the internship.

How is the internship graded?

The internship component is graded as Pass/Fail. You will be evaluated based on your overall performance including:

  • the quality of your work
  • your initiative
  • your ability to meet deadlines
  • your ability to receive and adapt to structured feedback
  • your professional conduct
  • your ability to work in a team environment

Do I need a study permit to enter the program?

Yes, international students require a study permit to attend a Canadian university. To obtain an application and detailed instructions, contact the Canadian Visa Office nearest you, or visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for further information. To complete the application process, you will need to contact a Canadian embassy or consulate or government representative.

In addition to the application and fee, you will be required to provide the following documentation:

  • Valid passport
  • Letter of acceptance from The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education
  • Evidence of adequate funds to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses for you and any dependents coming to Canadian with you (for example, personal bank statements, letters pledging financial support from family or other sponsors, or letters from your academic institution offering you employment or bursary, scholarship or fellowship money)
  • Other documents such as the results of a medical examination. Please check with your particular visa office

Students from some countries require a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada. These countries are listed on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. You do not have to make a separate application or pay a separate fee. An officer will issue it at the same time as the documentation that you will need to enter Canada as a student.

If you are planning to study in Canada for six months or less, you may study under Temporary Resident Status as a visitor.
International students changing institutions within Canada and who already hold a valid study permit are not required to apply for a new permit, but should include a copy of their visa authorization form or immigration papers with their application package.

How will I know where to go the first day of classes?

In the acceptance package, you will receive a First Class Orientation letter that provides all the details about where to go the first day, when to arrive, what to bring, and what to expect.

Where are my classes?

Classes will be held in the heart of downtown Winnipeg in either the Buhler Centre or AnX. UW is situated close to all major bus routes and commercial services.

What is the weather in Winnipeg like?

Winnipeg is proud to claim itself part of "sunny Manitoba". Temperatures, in Winnipeg, range from very cold weather in the winter to very hot in the summer. For more information on seasonal temperature changes in Winnipeg, please refer to the following, http://www.theweathernetwork.com/statistics/C02067/camb0244.

The motto here is, "there is no such thing as cold weather, just inappropriate clothing." Snow can begin falling in Winnipeg as early as October and stop as late as early May.

Can I choose which courses I take in the program?

No, the University sets program content and sets the program schedule for its full-time programs. Full-time programs are very comprehensive. Program content is determined in consultation with professional associations, business partners, instructors, and graduates who work in the industry and ongoing program review.

What does the schedule look like?

Courses may be sceduled anytime between 9AM to 9PM and varies by program. Courses that are scheduled for 8 hour blocks will have a one hour meal break as well as two shorter break.

Courses run for full days over 6 to 12 weeks depending on the demands in a particular course. Courses are scheduled by day of week, not time slot.

Programs are divided into five distinct blocks of courses, with the final block designated to internship placements.

One month before your program begins, you will be emailed a link to your course schedule. You will get more information about accessing your online program schedule, which includes information about study days, holiday closures, and vacation breaks.

Note: The program content and schedule is subject to change. While the University does not anticipate any changes, unexpected events may impact on a full-time program schedule. Students are responsible for monitoring the online schedule.

Who are my instructors?

UWinnipeg PACE instructors are respected industry professionals and leading subject-experts who anchor the theoretical components with real-world experience. Our students rate UWinnipeg PACE instructors highly and identify them as a key factor in their academic success.

What kind of workload can I expect?

The workload is intense. You will have between 25-35 hours of instruction per week and should expect upwards to 40 hours of homework on a weekly basis.

Can I work and study at the same time?

As an international student you may be able to work off-campus under your study permit; however, PACE recommends that you wait several months before seeking employment in order to ascertain whether you can balance the demands of the full-time program with a part-time job. Work cannot interfere with your academic schedule and the University expects you to schedule work shifts outside of classroom hours.

Do I need health care coverage while I am studying in Canada?

All international students must have the appropriate health insurance coverage during their stay in Canada and purchase their health insurance through the UWinnipeg PACE Registration Office by the first day of class. More information about health insurance is available upon request.

Should I identify a physical or learning disability or a chronic medical condition?

UWinnipeg PACE asks you to identify any learning or physical disability, or chronic medical condition that may impact on your studies or require services or accommodations. You should register with the University's Accessibility Services, which provides students with disabilities, mental health concerns, medical conditions and temporary injuries the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of campus life.
